Proscar is used to reduce the the prostate gland size for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate is a part of the male reproductive system, which is responsible for producing a milky sperm fluid. Past the age of 50 most men would develop enlarged prostate symptoms. As it gets bigger, it might interfere with the normal urine flow. What is it used for?

As it gets bigger, it might interfere with the normal urine flow. Finasteride is capable of helping to reduce the symptoms caused by BPH, including but not limited to: weak or interrupted urine flow; a feeling of not completely empty bladder; the need to pass urine more often, especially at night; urgent desires to must pass urine right away; a delay or hesitation when you start to urinate. Finasteride is also used for the treatment of certain types of male hair loss. Finasteride should never be taken by women.
What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?
Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:
- if you are female (finasteride is not for use by women)
- kidney disease or infection
- liver disease
- prostate cancer
- an unusual or allergic reaction to finasteride, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
How is this medicine should be taken?
Take finasteride tablets orally. Tablets should be swallowed accompanied with a drink of water. You can take this medicine with or without food. Your doses should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.
Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.
What to do if I missed a dose?
If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If you do not remember about it until the next day, take only that day's dose. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.
What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?
- some blood pressure medications
- male hormones (example: testosterone)
- saw palmetto
- soy isoflavones supplements
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking this medicine?
You shouldn’t donate blood until at least 6 months passed after your final dose of finasteride. This will make sure you wouldn’t give finasteride to a pregnant female through a blood transfusion.
Refer to your physician if your symptoms do not improve over time. It may be necessary for you to be taking finasteride for 6 to 12 months in order to experience its full effect.
Pregnant women or those planning to get pregnant should under no circumstances handle broken or crushed finasteride tablets, the active ingredient of which can harm the unborn baby. If it happens that a pregnant woman comes into contact with broken or crushed finasteride tablets, she should refer to her physician for advice. Exposure to the whole tablets is harmless as long as they are not swallowed by a woman.
It is possible for finasteride to interfere with PSA laboratory prostate cancer tests. If you have scheduled a lab test for prostate cancer, let your prescriber or health care professional know that you are taking finasteride.
Does this medicine have any possible side effects?
The below side effects usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):
- breast enlargement or tenderness
- skin rash
- sexual difficulties (less sexual desire or ability to get an erection)
- small amount of semen released during sex
Where should I store it?
Keep it out of the children’s reach in a container that cat not be opened by children.
This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect it from the light. Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
